Capcom’s Christian Svensson Wants Street Fighter Vs. Mortal Kombat?

@capcom_unity @eventhubscom

EventHubs had the chance to sit down with Capcom’s Christian Svensson. All around it is an interesting read as Sven talks about why interacting with Capcom’s fans is so important. One of the more interesting parts of the interview is what Sven says when asked about Capcom crossover titles.

EventHubs: If all licensing and financial hurdles were cleared out of the way, who would you most like to do a crossover Vs. fighting game with?

Svensson: There are other hurdles beyond licensing and financial in these sorts of things but I’d probably pick Mortal Kombat. Having been a VP at Midway as well, the franchise still holds a special place in my heart.

“Capcom Did Not Have Complete Access To All Marvel Characters”

Capcom’s Christian Svensson and Ray Jimenez answered a few fan questions over on Capcom Unity that I though may be of some interest. Talks about why some popular Marvel characters arent being used and why Capcom seems to not be listening to the whining about Pheonix Wright being in the game.

Why isn’t Capcom listening to fans who want Phoenix Wright and Ghost Rider in MvC3?

Sven: The roster is fairly final at this point and has been for a while. That said, your questions and suggestions may play a role in future decisions.

You guys had complete access to the entire library of Marvel characters, and you left out people like Daredevil and Ghost Rider, that’s stupid.

Jimenez: That’s quite the assumption there. Capcom did not have complete access to all Marvel characters. Also, and this was probably said before, Marvel has final word on who ends up in the game on the Marvel side.

Do you guys plan on releasing these games? Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Final Fight 4, Street Fighter 5, Street Fighter 3rd Strike HD Remix, Street Fighter X Tekken, Resident Evil 6?

Sven: We’ve announced MvC3 and SF X Tekken. I can’t comment on the others. Beyond that, you’ll hear about several new titles before the end of this calendar year and more still at Captivate early next year.

Christian Svensson: No More Fighters This Year

As always Christian Svensson has been over on the Capcom Unity boards answering fan questions. He touches on some interesting things that may excite and disapoint players.

Are you guys going to release any other fighting games this year?

Sven: Beyond Super Street Fighter IV that shipped just 3 months ago? No.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is “Spring” [2011].

And Street Fighter 3 Third Strike Online Edition and Street Fighter X Tekken are not this year… and as stated in the [Comic-Con] panel where it was announced SFxT is really far away. Development only has really started after Super shipped.

Is Street Fighter X Tekken limited to just the Tekken characters, or will we see other Namco franchises represented?

Sven: It is purely Street Fighter and Tekken characters. This is an X (“Cross”) title, not a Versus title.

I heard that Yoshinori Ono said Street Fighter X Tekken plays more like a Street Fighter game than a Vs. game, so they decided to label it as a Cross game, i.e. an X. Is this true?

Sven: [Yes]. Versus games have very specific mechanics. This game is a Street Fighter game (which also has very specific mechanics but they are different from Versus titles).

Were the characters that were included in Super Street Fighter 4 based on fan feedback or were they selected because they fit in with the storyline?

Sven: [...] Indeed the roster for SSFIV was determined by fan feedback from the roster we had in SFIV. People asked for more SF3, Final Fight and Alpha characters as well as wanting to complete the SF2 cast. So that’s what we provided.

The ones that were chosen in each of those categories were indeed based upon the popularity of those characters/fan feedback.

Ghost Rider isn’t going to be playable in Marvel vs. Capcom 3? Are you insane!?

Sven: Sorry guys but I really can’t say why certain decisions to cut one character or another was made. I generally don’t sit in those meetings as they get more detailed than I’m usually able to get (though I was in the ones where the initial proposals were determined and as Niitsuma mentioned, Ghost Rider was in the mix at that time).

I will say that the roster we have across the board is excellent and I believe at the end of the day, people will be pleased. There’s no shortage of great additions from both pantheons and at the same time, there are many others that would have also been great additions who for whatever reason, didn’t make the cut this time.

Are you going to use GGPO with your upcoming fighting games?

Sven: I’m not going to be able to answer this directly but let me ask you a question.

What have been the commonalities in titles that have used it (or something like it) and ones that haven’t?

In the EGMi write up for MvC3, they say it’s going to be released on the Wii. Is this true?

Sven: The information they’ve given is incorrect. It is only for X360 and PS3.

Will we see Lucia Morgan and Dean from Final Fight 3 added to a Street Fighter game?

Sven: I would say that this would be a long shot.

Christian Svensson had a nice lengthy interview with Gamasutra and said a whole lot of interesting things. (more…)

What Are The Chances Of A Street Fighter III Remake? Capcom Answers

When it was released way back in the day, Street Fighter III didn’t really achieve the popularity of its predecesor yet it has gained a huge fan following due to the highly competitive tournaments that sprung up around the game. With Capcom rereleasing so many classic 2D fighters for download services, many fans are wondering when and if Street Fighter III will get the same treatment. Christian Svensson and Seth Killian from Capcom took to the Capcom Unity boards to try to clear things up.

Is Capcom going to re-release Street Fighter 3 Third Strike?

Christian Svensson: These things don’t happen over night guys and if it were to happen, it would still be a ways off given that there’s nothing currently in development along these lines.

That said, we do know that it’s been a really popular request. The suggestion box alone and these forums make that really apparent. We’ll see what happens.

Seth Killian: We’re definitely aware of the interest in the SFIII series, which is why we answer questions like this at least once a week :P

That said, there’s no action on this front at the moment, though it’s something to consider for the future. We have a bunch of great new fighting games out at the moment — more than we’ve had in the past 10 years combined, so please be understanding about our reluctance to risk totally flooding the market.
